Taiwan - Latest Defence Technologies At Taiwan Exhibition (15 Aug 2003)

The large turnout at the Taipei Aerospace Technology Exhibition (TATE) 2003 showed that firms were eager to engage with Taiwan's 10-year arms buying spree worth NT$700 billion (S$36 billion).

Among the participating arms making firms were Bell Helicopter, Boeing, Dassualt Aviation, Northrop Grumman, Pratt and Whitney, Raytheon and Rockwell Collins.

However, military analysts predicted that the majority of weapons procurement contracts would be awarded to US firms. One reason being that only the United States has the political power to arm Taiwan despite Beijing's protests and has remained Taiwan's leading arms supplier.

Taiwan is waiting to acquire eight conventional submarines, long-range early warning radar systems and Patriot PAC-3 anti missile systems.
