India - India Plans To Install
Submarine Rescue Facilities (01 Aug 2003)
The Indian Navy is currently examining its options in acquiring
submarine rescue facilities. The Indian Navy intends to procure
two Deep Submergence Rescue Vessels (DSRVs) and rescue kits.
Proposals of the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessels submitted by
British, Canadian, Italian, Russian and Swedish firms are being
examined. A transportable DSRV allows the submarine crew to escape
to the surface after it connects with their stranded submarine.
The Navy is now reviving the 1997 contract signed with the US
Navy's ''global submarine rescue fly-away kit'' service. The Phase-I
of this contract involved compatibility of submarines with the
''fly-away kits''.
