Maritime Security Asia 2004 International Conference
was held at The Shangri-La Hotel on 12 Nov 2004. The event was
well supported by Government Organisations, the Military and the
International Defence Community. A total of 135 delegates attended
and 11 papers were presented.
Dr Rohan Gunaratna contributed a paper to the
Conference but not presented on ' The Changing Face of Maritime
Terrorism' for the conference. Dr Rohan Gunaratna is Head, International
Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at the Institute
of Defence and Strategic Studies in Singapore. He is also Senior
Advisor to the Maritime Intelligence Group, Washington, DC.
The Conference achieved its objectives in providing
up-to-date information and also promoting interaction between
key personnel in Regulatory Bodies, Enforcement Agencies, Shipping
Companies and Defence Industry Leaders.
The Conference commenced with a Keynote Address
by Prof Dr KS Nathan, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Southeast
Asian Studies, Singapore. Prof Nathan outlined the Threats, Challenges
and Prospects with regard to Maritime Security in Southeast Asia
and set the framework for discussion for the day's proceedings.
Some of our honoured guests included Commander
Police Coast Guard, DAC Jerry See, Commander Coastal Command,
COL Chng Teow Hiang who also presented a paper on 'Singapore's
Initiatives to Enhance Port and Maritime Security.'
Most of the participants found the Conference
well organised and informative and saw it as a professional forum
to discuss new technologies, regulations, policies etc with various
interest groups.
Maritime Security Asia 2005 International Conference
will be held on 16th and 17 th November 2005 in Singapore.
